Protect Your Mouth While Playing Sports

Published on April 1st, 2018

April is National Facial Protection Month, and a great time to review safe practices for protecting your mouth when playing sports. Whether you are a player, a parent, or a coach, keeping your mouth protected when playing any time of sport is important. Missing teeth and other facial trauma can cause long term treatment that can be expensive or painful. To avoid any facial trauma this season and beyond, try a few of our tips.

Wear a mouthguard
Without question, wearing a mouthguard is the best way to prevent oral damage during sports. While many athletes use mouthguards while playing full contact sports like karate, hockey, or football, it is wise to consider using mouthguards for other sports as well. Basketball players and soccer players, for example, could benefit from wearing a mouthguard.

If you aren’t quite sure if you should be wearing a mouthguard, or if you need help choosing one that best suits your situation, give the team at Stone Dental Group a call. We want to help you protect your beautiful teeth and gums!

Make good decisions
Not all dental emergencies or trauma happen on the sports field. In fact, kids can injure their mouths playing anywhere. A tumble from the top of a slide or a bump from a fall while on a nature trail can all result in a missing tooth or swollen lip. While it is impossible to wear a mouthguard or helmet at all times, it is possible to make good decisions to remain as safe as possible when playing. Talk to your kids about making safe decisions and knowing when to slow down in order to avoid slips or falls.

Get to the dentist
If you have suffered facial trauma thanks to sports or play, be sure you contact your dentist. It is important for dental work to happen as quickly as possible in oral trauma situations, and it is better to let us know sooner than later.

Are you searching for a family dentist who is well versed in sports protection and general dentistry? Give Stone Dental Group a try. We would love to meet you and become a part of your healthcare team.
