The team at Stone Dental takes your oral health seriously. However, most of our patients are unaware that responsible dental health includes more than just semi-annual exams and regular brushing habits. While these preventative measures are certainly a key component to your overall oral health, it is also imperative that your dentist knows the facts and signs of more significant dental health concerns, like oral cancers.
Fortunately, the team at Stone Dental Group is well versed in oral cancers and takes measures to keep our patients as safe as possible. During your semi-annual dental check-up, for example, our dentists are sure to check for possible signs or potential indicators that could point to oral cancer. We check for any discoloration throughout your mouth, gums, and palate, as well as feeling for any lumps or abnormalities that could trigger follow up care.
Unless you know someone personally who has been affected by oral cancer, you may not think about it often. However, oral cancers are a real concern for people living in America. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are approximately 40,000 new cases of oral cancer diagnosed each year and nearly 9,000 deaths. While the five-year survival rate for oral cancers is about 59%, it is still a serious disease that can cause extensive pain and require invasive treatment or procedures.
Early detection, as with most cancers, is the key to survival for oral cancer. The sooner the cancer is detected, the quicker a treatment plan can be developed. A major factor in early detection is the semi-annual check-up at your dental office.
If you haven’t scheduled your latest check-up appointment yet, don’t delay. Chances are high that your insurance covers the cost of the appointment, as well as the oral cancer screening that we include during your time in the office. We can’t wait to see you soon!
