Some people consider Lumineers and veneers as the same dental procedure. But they are not the same. Apart from improving your smile, their work is distinct from each other. The differences are mostly related to cost, size, and ease of application.
Let us dive deep into this subject and learn about the best choice for enhancing your smile.
Dental veneers are thin shells that are custom-made according to the patients’ teeth. They are either made from composite material or dental porcelain. It works at improving the appearance of the teeth when bonded to the front surface of the teeth. They are approximately 0.5 millimeters thick and are an excellent restoration option for those who want to treat their chipped or cracked teeth.
Veneers are the perfect example of perfectly white, bright, and glossy teeth. Because they do not have pores like tooth enamel, they are more resistant to staining. However, the edges of the veneers that are in contact with the tooth could get stained after five or more years.
On average, traditional veneers can last for eight to ten years, with a high success rate of 20 years. They last even longer if cared for well.
Veneers are suitable for those whose teeth appear to be more yellow or brown, decayed or stained severely. They cover up those teeth and make them look their best, as they originally did.
Lumineers are also known as no-prep veneers. They are a particular brand of veneers that are made of ultra-thin lamination. They are 0.3 millimeters thick and are relatively easier to place on your teeth.
Lumineers treat discolored and misshapen teeth like veneers. They are smooth and silky when touched. However, they are not a good option for people with severely stained teeth as they are relatively more transparent than veneers.
According to the manufacturers, Lumineers last longer, i.e., up to ten to 20 years. However, some sources claim that they only last for ten years before needing to be replaced.
Both Lumineers and veneers are effective in treating various cosmetic dental issues. Those who undergo either of the procedures love their smile and enjoy confidence. However, not all dental offices offer Lumineers. So, it is highly recommended to consult your dentist as they will give you the best course of treatment according to your dental issues and budget, respectively.
